Net Zero Energy Housing Update
CHBA’s Net Zero Energy Housing Council (NZC) supports innovation in our industry with the goal of creating a market advantage for CHBA builder and renovator members pursuing Net Zero Energy performance.
In alignment with the CHBA Strategic Priority to Advance Innovation, the mandate of this self-funding Council is to deliver services that will support members’ voluntary adoption of Net Zero Homes.
Since launching in December 2014, the Council’s efforts have focused on 4 key priorities – with the objective of removing barriers to the adoption of Net Zero:
- A Net Zero Home Labeling Program has been developed to distinguish and recognize both Net Zero and Net Zero Ready Homes, as well as the builders/renovators. The Program Standards Sub-Committee has made progress and the v1 Technical Standard is near completion. We’re now working towards a Feb 1 effective date.
- Marketing & Communications initiatives have been undertaken to develop the Net Zero Home brand. Plans are now under development for efforts to build awareness and understanding of the value of Net Zero Homes, and to drive market demand.
- Educational initiatives have been implemented to bridge the knowledge gap and accelerate builder capacity to capitalize on Net Zero Homes. More training courses will be developed, more training sessions will be delivered, and more webinars are in the works. Net Zero Boot Camp will be back too.
- Financing initiatives to address the initial cost of Net Zero Homes through innovative and effective financing mechanisms will continue in 2017. Efforts going forward will also focus on reducing the upfront cost of the homes.
